Welcome to Slaithwaite, one of Huddersfield’s most up-and-coming villages. Nestled in the Colne Valley and surrounded by dramatic countryside, Slaithwaite combines heritage charm with a trendy, independent spirit. It’s no wonder this village is gaining national attention. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, 5 miles (8 km) south-west of Huddersfield. It is a large, vibrant village in the Pennine foothills, known as ‘Slawit’ by the locals. It is located by the River Colne and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal on the Transpennine rail route between Huddersfield and Manchester. There are many independent shops, a post office, cafes in the centre of Slaithwaite and several traditional pubs. In February, on alternate years, Slaithwaite celebrates a 19th-century legend of Moonraking with the Slaithwaite Moonraking Festival, a week of lantern making and a programme of storytelling. Local schools include: Nields Academy, Slaithwaite Junior & Infant School and Wilberlee Junior & Infant School.
