Bus Station Improvements Can Impact Local Life

We are always on the lookout for improvements in and around Huddersfield. This is why news of a £28m transformation of Huddersfield Bus Station has caught our attention. Anything which makes life easier, or makes commuting faster, is positive news for residents, and the local community.

At ADM Residential, we know many factors influence demand in the local housing market. We are keen to see the developments that shape local life for the better, so we are keen to see how things change after work is completed at Huddersfield Bus Station.

Huddersfield improvements coming your way

Some of the benefits promised with the changes include:

  • A better standard of accessibility
  • More environmentally friendly travel
  • Improved standard of connections across Kirkless

The project is led by West Yorkshire Combined Authority who are working in partnership with Kirklees Council.

These projects always have lofty aims and ambitions, but it is good to see the bus station will remain in full operation while work takes place. While work must take place to bring about improvements, too many of these projects often lead to challenges in every day life. It is inevitable there will be some difficulties or problems, but hopefully things will run smoothly, with a minimal negative impact on daily life.

While the focus falls on bus station improvements, it is hoped that the impact will be felt by everyone. This is because the work is related to the Weaver Network. This is the new integrated transport system for West Yorkshire. This means buses, cycling, trains, walking and wheels are all coming together under one umbrella. As always, the hope is that these changes make life simpler for everyone, hopefully increasing the quality of life for Huddersfield residents.

Huddersfield travel should get better

West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin said the investment formed part of a wider plan to create a better-connected region: “We will transform Huddersfield Bus Station into a state-of-the-art facility the town can be proud of. Along with our investments into Heckmondwike and Dewsbury bus stations, we’re improving everyday journeys for people across the region. This is part of our plan for a better-connected West Yorkshire with the Weaver Network at its heart – a seamless way to get around, no matter how you choose to travel.”

Professor Tim Thornton is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Huddersfield, and he has spoken on the topic, saying: “This represents a major step forward in connectivity for the University of Huddersfield community. By providing a more modern, accessible and efficient transport hub, it will make commuting easier and more reliable for both students and staff, enhance the overall experience of travelling to and from campus, and strengthen the university’s links with the wider region. This investment not only supports day-to-day journeys but also reflects a shared commitment to creating a more sustainable and welcoming environment for everyone who studies and works here.”

Construction firm pledges jobs and training opportunities

Construction company Willmott Dixon, which is delivering the project, says the redevelopment will also provide employment, apprenticeships and educational opportunities in the local area.

Chris Yates is the Yorkshire Director of Willmott Dixon, and he released a statement, saying: “We’re delighted to be working in partnership with West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Kirklees Council to transform Huddersfield Bus Station into a modern and sustainable transport hub to better connect people. We’re passionate about creating employment opportunities and work experience as part of our projects, and this is no different.”

It is understandable that people want to see the bigger picture, to better understand the impact on the local community. Chris Yates also talked about this, saying: ““We’re aiming to provide 584 employment support hours, 177 hours of educational support in local schools and colleges, 398 apprentice weeks and 31 weeks of work experience during the station transformation. We’re looking forward to starting on site next week.”

With the first batch of work beginning on Monday 1st June, locals will see some changes already. There is expected to be no impact on bus services for a couple of weeks, although this will likely change from Monday 15th June. This is the date that groundworks are due to begin, and passengers are advised to check travel plans in advance.

There will be more staff on hand at the service as work takes place, but the more people can do to prepare themselves for the upheaval, the better.

We all want to see improvement across Huddersfield, and there is no denying the positive impact improved public transport has on a community. It is likely there will be challenges in the short-term, but we hope that there will be a real change to how locals, and visitors, get around Huddersfield.
